Melvin Houston Hughes

Melvin Houston “Mel” Hughes, 84, of Dalton passed away at his home on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe Hughes and Edna Jolee Gentry Martin; step-mother Effie Hughes; sister Effie “Carolyn” Lambert; and brother-in-law Jerry Preciado.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Morrison Hughes; sons Chad (Bethany) Hughes and Tony (Melissa) Patterson; daughters Rita (Jimmy) Crider, Mendy (Clifford) Middleton, Angie (Steve) Fauscett, and Terri Kirby; brothers Jeff (Debbie) Hughes, Larry Hughes, and Alan Hughes; and sister Andrea “Punkin” Preciado; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Hughes will be Sunday, September 14 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Chatsworth with Revs. Tony Pattterson and Donald Cantrell officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. Burial will follow in United Memorial Gardens in Dalton.
