Margaret Ruth Watkins age 90 passed away Monday, December 4, 2023, peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends.
She was born on December 26, 1932 in Tunnel Hill, GA to the late Herschal and Aileen Sharp Bates. Margaretivas a 1950 graduate of Dalton High School, a 1955 graduate of the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Education, and West Georgia University with a Masters in Library Science. Margaret taught first grade at Ringgold Elementary School and later was a Librarian in the media center. She worked at Ringgold Elementary School for 37 years, retiring in June 1992.
Margaret was preceded in death by her brother Lamar Bates and her parents.
Margaret is survived by her husband Jerry Watkins of 67 years; her daughter Susan (Greg) Pike and son Steven Watkins; grandchildren Joseph Bragg, Robert Pike, Hannah and Ansley Watkins; brothers James (Kathy) Bates of Rocky Face and Edward (Beverly) Bates of Cohutta; sister-in-law Janice Watkins of Ringgold; also surviving are multiple nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Margaret was a loving Mother, Wife, Aunt, and friend. She was an artist in her quilt making and a wonderful homemaker with her gardening, canning, and cooking which she shared with her family and friends. She was a wonderful seamstress making her children's clothes, square dancing dresses, and curtains for her home. She and Jerry enjoyed traveling the USA, attending Georgia Bulldog games, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and spoiling their beloved dog River. Margaret loved to read and always enjoyed a good book. Margaret was active in the Ringgold United Methodist Church where she was a member of the FOB Class, choir, quilters group, and shared her delicious cakes to fund raise for the mission and ministry of the church. Margaret was a volunteer at Hutcheson Auxiliary for many years after retiring from the Elementary School. She also spent many summers coaching softball for the Recreation Dept.
A Memorial Service will be held at Ringgold United Methodist Church on December 10, 2023, at 2:30. The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2:30 at the church.
The Family would especially like to thank Gary Knowles who has been a faithful visitor and Hearth Hospice for their wonderful care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to NCIC or The Children's Celebration of Christmas.
