Obituary

Horace Vickery, age 87 of Dalton, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 21st, 2020.

Horace was born in Alford, Florida. After graduating from high school in Cottondale, Florida, he began working for the Corps of Engineers. He married Adalene Bush in 1953. He served in the US Navy from 1954-1956, then returned to work for the Corps of Engineers, where he participated in the engineering and construction of many dams in the Southeast. In 1970, the Carters Dam project brought him and his family to Chatsworth. In 1976 he transferred to the Corps of Engineers district office in Mobile, Alabama, where he retired in 1988. He and Adalene moved back to Chatsworth in 2007 to be near family.

Horace was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the Abba Temple in Mobile, Alabama, where he was Shriner of the Year in 1988. Horace and Adalene loved square dancing and were members of several clubs over the years, including Fort Mountain Squares in Chatsworth.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Chatsworth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wesley Vickery and Jecoliah Morris Vickery, his wife, Adalene Bush Vickery, and his sister, Shirley Vickery Taylor.

He is survived by his sons, Blane (Nancy) Vickery of Dalton, and Keith (Margaret) Vickery of Naples, Florida; brother, Vernon (Dorothy) Vickery of Chattahoochee, Florida; sister Leverne Vickery Dunham of Marianna, Florida; grandchildren, Kristin Vickery of Altamonte Springs, Florida, Martin (Carolyn) Vickery of Fort Myers, Florida, and Merritt Vickery of Clearwater, Florida; several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held Monday, December 28th, at Murray Memorial Gardens, with Rev. George Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
