Mr. Gene Austin Mealor, of Dalton, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2020 at the age of 92. Born in Chattanooga, Mr. Mealor grew up during the Great Depression and served in the United States Army during World War II. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of Chattanooga and pursued a career in commercial art for 30 years. Mr. Mealor was employed as a graphic artist with Brown Printing Industries and served as art director for multiple advertising agencies. He also owned his own design agency. Mr. Mealor was a member of Dalton First Baptist Church.
A beloved local artist, Mr. Mealor was passionate about the local history and used a mixed medium of watercolors to capture historic landmarks of the North Georgia region as a hobby. His paintings have been exhibited in many guilds and galleries in the area over the years.
Mr. Mealor was preceded in death by his parents, E.A. Jack and Ibra Rhea Mealor; son, Jack Edward Mealor; daughter-in-law, Marlene Mealor.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Erma Mealor; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Lloyd Williams; son, Ray Mealor; daughter-in-law, Denese Mealor; daughter, Susan Gordon; grandchildren, Tonya and Frank Kendrick, Michael and Lacy Mealor, Jimmy and Tiffany Mosley, Megan Mealor, Andrew and Katie Conestra, Logan and Michelle Gordon, and Ashley Gordon.
A private graveside service will be held in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
