Gerald Haskell Watkins age 90 passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024 at home peacefully in his sleep. He was born on April 2, 1933 in Ringgold, GA to the late Haskell and Vivian Hullender Watkins.
Jerry was a 1950 graduate of Ringgold High School. After graduation he enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1955. He continued serving in the Air Force Reserves until 1959. Jerry continued his education with a Bachelor of Science Degree from UTC, and a Masters Degree from MTSU. Jerry taught High School Biology and was a Football and Baseball Coach in the Hamilton County School System, retiring in 1991. He was a beloved “Coach Watkins” to many, and a third generation educator.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years Margaret Watkins, and his parents.
Jerry is survived by his daughter Susan (Greg) Pike and son Steven Watkins, both of Ringgold; sister Janice Watkins of Ringgold; grandchildren Joseph Bragg, Robert Pike, Hannah and Ansley Watkins; also surviving are multiple nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Jerry was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, and friend. He enjoyed traveling and attending Georgia Bulldog games with Margaret, spending time with his children and grandchildren, spoiling his dog River, vegetable and flower gardening, and Bee Keeping. His honey and vegetables were loved by many. Jerry was active in the Ringgold United Methodist Church where he was a member of the FOB Class and served on many committees through the years.
A Memorial Service will be held at Ringgold United Methodist Church on April 8 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends at 10:00 at the church.
The Family would especially like to thank Gary Knowles for his faithful visits, Hearth Hospice for their wonderful care, and his caregivers Kelly Hollifield, Beth Hullander, and Brady Zelaya. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Ringgold United Methodist NCIC or The Benevolence Fund.
